About
the Incas

The
Inca Empire was founded in about 1225 A.D. when the Incas came down
from the Andes Mountains and conquered the weaker tribes. They imposed
their rules, their language (called Quechua which is still
in use today), and their spirituality on the lesser tribes in Ecuador,
Chile, Bolivia, Peru, and Argentina. They built one of the most powerful
empires in South America within the span of just 100 years.

They
were highly organized craftsmen and agriculturalists. They developed
the farming of potatoes and corn in South America. Both the conquered
tribes and the leading Incas produced the finest masonry as well.
Evidence of their skill can still be seen today in the massive stone
walls and buildings of cities like Machu Pichu and Cuzco.
The
Incas and their ancestors were also gifted at pottery and metal work.
Some of the finest pottery in the world is still produced in these
regions today.

Of
the three Native civilizations found in South America (Mayas, Incas,
and Aztecs), the Incas were the least warlike. Their outstanding accomplishments
in art and agriculture have endured throughout the centuries as their
knowledge and expertise has been passed down from generation to generation.
They have retained their culture, their lifestyle, and their artistic
pursuits to this very day.
