The Inca Connection

Wood Sculptures and Friezes

Most of our Master wood sculptors are from mixed Inca and Spanish descent. All of our sculptors started out at a very young age, going through basic schooling while learning their craft from a relative at home. They all graduated from the Colegio de Artes Plasticas. It is truly a vocation that demands an intense personal commitment from the artist, and they all have amazing talent paired with extreme dedication to their work.

Each piece of sculpture requires an array of hand tools (no machine tools are used on any of the pieces). Our sculptures for the most part are carved from a single piece of wood hand sanded, waxed, and signed by the artist.

The finely crafted figures are made from nogal, a species of walnut. The large friezes, taller and better suited for wall decoration, are carved from several species of cedar.

The few top carvers are all 50 years old or older. Sadly, few young people today pursue this noble art form, making it apparent that finding top quality wood sculptures will become increasingly difficult in the years to come as the old masters pass away.
